Morphine & Fentanyl Overdose

On Monday my 2 year old nephew Landon had his tonsils and adenoids removed. Here he is getting wheeled away in the wagon. They had him blow on the balloon to put him under.
This is after he was done. Landon was crying and screaming so the nurse gave him morphine and fentanyl.  Shortly after he fell asleep. His oxygen started dropping a little so they gave him oxygen.
Then his oxygen started dropping more,
here they are checking him.
His oxygen was dropping so much they had to put an adult mask on him and put it as high as it would go. Well, his oxygen was still dropping too fast. A couple nurses came in and his oxygen was at 74. One nurse hit a button and a code blue was called overhead. Immediately about 15 people came rushing in. It dropped to 70 and they started doing all sorts of things to him. They gave him medicine called Narcan that's supposed to reverse what medicines have been given. Then a doctor comes in and starts asking what he'd been given. Then he told the nurses he wanted more coverage on him. The Narcan worked and he was breathing better. He had just gotten too relaxed by the morphine and fentanyl. When Tina told me this I thought it was crazy that he had that kind of reaction because Skylar had been given morphine too and didn't even fall asleep till hours later. Landon slept all day.
Well later that day someone came in and told them they felt they needed to tell them that while Landon was under anesthesia the Anesthesiologist gave him morphine and fentanyl. Well, then up on the floor the nurse who also gave him morphine and fentanyl asked a different anesthesiologist if she could give him morphine. Instead of either of them looking at his chart they just gave him more morphine and fentanyl! So, they overdosed him on morphine and fentanyl!
Here he is 9 pm hours later still loopy from the morphine.

Feeling a little better and loving his orange socks!

To make things better that night a new nurse was asking Tina if her baby (2 months old and nursing) was spending the night. Tina said that he was and the nurse said that he wasn't allowed, that no one under 18 is allowed to spend the night. Tina said, "well I'm not leaving him (pointing to Landon) and he (pointing to Mason...her baby) has to stay with me." The nurse said, "I'm sorry but that's policy, no one under 18 is allowed." Tina again said that she was staying with Landon and the baby had to stay with her. The nurse again said that that wasn't allowed and what was she going to do. Tina told her she wasn't leaving Landon after what happened to him and the baby was staying here so she'll have to make it happen. Then the nurse said, "you'll have to fill out some paper work then!" Tina said, "then bring out the paper work!" That night his oxygen would drop a little sometimes and not one nurse came in to check on him. During the day as soon as the monitor beeped someone was in there. She loved the day staff. He spent the night and went home the next morning.
So glad that wasn't my experience! SCARY!

Skylar's surgery...Recovery, Day 14 appointment

Today we had Skylar's 2 week appointment after her surgery. She's doing good but still has an abnormal amount of scaring and rawness for this stage. We're supposed to keep pushing the fluids and not let her be real active for another week. Tonight is the first time she's eaten all the food given to her AND she asked for more. She's lost 4 lbs so she's down to 25, so hopefully she'll be eating more and more.  She's a happy, sweet little girl who's very clingy. My mother in-law mentioned that that could be because she remembers being taken away from me and then coming back in pain. That makes a lot of sense so hopefully she'll forget that soon.

Skylar's surgery...Recovery, Day 12

Well, I think she's pretty much back to normal other than not eating much and still really clingy. She's drinking really well and only needed medicine once today. She played really good and slept through the night again. I'll post again if something else happens or after her Dr. appointment.

Skylar's surgery...Recovery, Day 11

I think this is finally coming to an end. Today she still didn't eat much but she drank a lot better and her throat didn't seem to hurt as much. She wanted to be held a lot today still but luckily her cousins Landon and Ashlynn were here to distract her a little so she didn't beg to be held too much till after about 7 which was good because today was a really busy day. She was so happy today, pretty much her normal self except for not eating much. YAY! Oh ya and she slept all night last night in her own bed, didn't wake up once!

Skylar's surgery...Recovery, Day 10

Same thing today, not eating or drinking much and not wanting her medicine. Tonight she ate a little better than the rest of the day. I really need to get her drinking more, by 2:30 her diaper from this morning was still dry so she's definitely not getting enough fluids. She won't eat popsicles or anything like that at all anymore. We've got to be nearing the end right? I guess I need to edit this and mention that she was much happier and way less bossy today. The strange odor on her breath is not as bad either. She's finally not constipated but has diarrhea now.

Skylar's surgery...Recovery, Day 9

Pretty much the same thing, not eating or drinking much, less ornery though but she's not getting away with it as much. Today she refused her medicine from about 3am till 1pm when she finally said "ok mamma I want medicine" I guess she decided she'd had enough pain. She was much sweeter today, still wants to be held a lot which is fine by me, except when I have a house to clean for company.
Oh I almost forgot to mention that I weighed her, she's lost 2 lbs. She weighed 29 lbs before now she's 27. Her breath has a really bad odor today too!

Skylar's surgery...Recovery, Day 8

Well today she's still in pain but not usually before the medicine wears off so that's good. She's not eating or drinking very well in fact I'm curious to know how much she weighs. I'll have to weigh her in the morning. She's been happier today but still has plenty of moments where she's ornery and throws fits when she doesn't get her way, she wasn't like that before and I'm hoping she doesn't continue it after she's feeling better...I have a feeling some of it will continue, only I won't feel guilty disciplining her for it when she's better.  I also hope she'll be fine with sleeping in her own bed again. I make it sound like she's terrible but really for the most part she's happy and sweet. I think she's most ornery when the medicine is wearing off and after she tries to eat something and realizes it still hurts.

Skylar's surgery...Recovery, Day 7

Well today I had to work so I didn't get to see how Skylar was for very long. In the night she only woke up a couple times wanting medicine. Kerby says for the most part she was really good and sweet today, not near as ornery as yesterday. She ate and drank really good but hurt more, she's even willing to take the yucky medicine because it hurts so bad. She took a 4 hour nap (lucky dad) and when she woke up her voice was really raspy and that's how it sounded when I got home. I took some video of her talking that I'll post but I'm not sure if you can tell in it. Her voice has sounded like nothing happened to her when she talks but when she cries and screams it sounds really sore, now it sounds sore just when she talks. Here's the video, at the end she starts whispering but this is the most I was able to get her to talk while I had the camera on her.

Skylar's surgery...Recovery, Day 6

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas today, considering how terrible Skylar felt today I really enjoyed Christmas and spending time with my family. We had a lot of fun today!
Skylar started out doing really great today, other than waking up 3 times during the night crying and screaming, refusing medicine then would wake up again asking for it.She did great all morning and most of the afternoon then by about 2 pm she really started getting ornery.  On and off the rest of the day she cried, screamed and threw tantrums. She was hurting a lot today (probably from so much crying and screaming), so was asking for medicine a lot but most the time I couldn't give it to her.  Everything she tried to eat she said it hurt. There was so much candy around she kept wanting to eat it, so she'd stick it in her mouth then throw it away. She drank really good all day.  I'm hoping today is the worst it will get!
Kylee got a picture of her throat and it's got some pretty big scabs. They look green in the pic but they're really white and one was bleeding a little bit. This is how it's supposed to look at this stage, just in case you're wondering.

Skylar's surgery...Recovery, Day 5

Well today she ate and drank so much more. She sucked on jolly ranchers all day long too. I can tell though that her throat hurts more than it has been. When she swallows she has a painful face and it's no where near time for medicine, maybe because she's eating more. She woke up at 6 am screaming and wouldn't take medicine, she went back to sleep and woke up an hour later and said "mom can I have some mecidine please"? I haven't looked at her throat yet because she won't open her mouth wide enough so I don't push it. I keep forgetting to mention how her snoring is. Before the surgery she was snoring really bad, it was really loud and so bad that she'd stop breathing a lot. Well, her snoring is almost non existent. Sometimes she'll "snore" but it sounds more like a gurgling sound so maybe she's bleeding once in a while. I think when her nose is stuffed up she may snore though. Her throat still sounds sore when she cries. I just keep praying that we skip the bad day/s.

Skylar's surgery...Recovery, Day 4

Each day Skylar seems to be getting better. Today she ate and drank a little better but she asked for medicine more and kept saying it hurt. That may be because she's on ibuprofen instead of Tylenol with Codeine but she was yesterday too and seemed fine so hopefully it's not hurting more. She did wake up at 4 am and cry for 15 min. saying it hurt but wouldn't take medicine, finally I calmed her down and she took it. It had been several hours since she'd had any, the other nights she had it at a good time. When I got home from work today she looked a little pale to me still but she is really active for the most part and is doing really well. The only thing that concerns me is her fluids, I don't think she's getting enough. Her stool has been hard the past couple days (yes I'm actually talking about that) so I need to get her to drink more. Probably should just give her more popsicles, she hasn't turned one down yet! My wonderful friend Karen gave us some cool popsicles today and she slurped one down quickly! Thanks Karen, that was very thoughtful of you! Everyone says there is a bad day between days 3 and 8 so we'll see. Maybe she'll skip that!!! Crossing fingers!

Skylar's surgery...Recovery, Day 3

Today Skylar did so much better! First of all I decided to give up on the Tylenol w/ codeine and give her ibuprofen instead, she liked that much better and took it just fine, so she felt a lot better today. She ate a lot more than yesterday. For breakfast she had another big variety but wouldn't eat or drink any of it. All she'd eat was part of a candy cane, at least it kept her throat moist for a while. Then around 10:30 she asked for a hotdog so I cooked her one. She ate the whole thing (no bun). Then for lunch Kadin wanted to make mac n cheese so I let him. He gave Skylar some and she ate a pretty good amount. After lunch she had a popsicle, several small drinks of milk and Gatorade, another hotdog (she gave Mia half of it) and a little ice cream. For dinner she ate a few little smokies, a few bites of corn and half a croissant.
She wanted to be held a lot today, so all day long I heard, "I want a hug" (that's what she says when she wants to be held), which for the most part was fine with me. Hopefully each day gets better and better.

Recovery, Day 2

Today we had a really hard time getting Skylar to eat or drink anything. As you can see she had a nice selection of foods for breakfast this morning. She begged and begged for cereal which she had 1 bite of and decided that mom was right when she said it would hurt so she didn't eat anymore. She had a couple bites of yogurt and a couple of sherbet ice cream and a swallow of Capri Sun.
I really hope she doesn't expect this kind of selection after she's better. I'm the kind of person that says "this is what we're eating, you eat this or don't eat."
She acted pretty normal today, even felt good enough to put some stickers on Mia.
She did have 3 short 45 min naps. This was her first, right after her bath.
Here she managed to open up her antibiotics (that's the only medicine she wants) while I was getting her pain medicine (which she refused all day, finally I'd have to force her to take it) :(
So much for childproof lids huh? Hopefully she doesn't remember how she did it.
See the spots all over her pajamas? That's her Tylenol w/ Codeine I had to force her to swallow after she spit some out, it got all over in her hair, her pajamas and my pants.
She didn't eat or drink much the whole day. She threw a fit a couple times when I tried to give her a Capri Sun I had frozen so it was a slushie. It was actually pretty good, when she saw me eating it she decided she wanted it and ate a couple bites. I've got to get her eating and drinking, mostly drinking so she doesn't get dehydrated.

Skylar's surgery, Day 1

Today Skylar got her tonsils and adenoids removed. I've never had one of my children have surgery. Man that was quite a different experience than I expected...well some of it. Here she is getting ready to leave to go to the hospital at 6:30 am. She has no idea what is about to happen (she's only 2), she's just been wondering why mom got her up so early to give her a bath and do her hair while everyone else is still sleeping.
Oh, we can't leave without her favorite blankie. Cute huh? Her Grammy Nancy made it for her and she wants to take it everywhere with her.
Arrived at the hospital at 6:50. Here we are, already done with registration. Now she's getting a quick checkup by the nurse.
Ooh, now this is getting fun! The cute hospital nightgown and red socks. She is really excited about the red socks, most of the day she was pulling them back onto her feet because they're a little too big but she loved them!
Just playing around, still with no idea what's about to happen.
Still playing around, the nurse came and opened up the curtains and she did not want that! They had to be closed so she kept closing them.
Here's where things start to get "weird" for her. Right now she's watching another patient get wheeled away on a gurney. She is pretty concerned and just starting to wondering "what am I doing here?"
I think she's feeling a little uncomfortable now and unsure of what's happening.
Now she's begging me for gum but can't eat or drink anything till after. Good thing it's so early.
Trying to search my pockets for gum.
Yay! I thought! A little red wagon instead of a gurney. How fun, she'll like that.
Nope, I'm carrying Skylar while she pulls all our things in the wagon.
After sitting for a while she decided to get in the wagon if I'd pull her in it. So I did that for a few minutes while we waited for the Anesthesiologist and Dr. Ense.
One of the nurses who said she'd be with her for the whole surgery. I think her name is Jenny.
Skylar's really excited to be talking to her. ;)
Here's Dr. Ense, after talking more to him this morning I'm liking him much more and I felt comfortable that he was performing the surgery. Skylar however looks like she's thinking "just get away from me, you're not doing anything to me."
Nurses Kyle and (maybe this is Jenny) I can't remember... getting ready to take her back.
At 7:45 she's headed back, I'm actually surprised she even let him take her instead of her.
What they do is put a mask on her for the anesthetics right when they get her back there. It takes about 10 seconds for them to go to sleep.
Good luck Skylar. I love you!
Dr. Ense came out and talked to me at 8:25 and said everything went really well and that she did really good. He said I could go back to see her after she woke up and was a little active.
At 8:50 I got to go and see her, they were taking her up to her recovery room. The next hour is completely heart breaking for me.
Here she is, hysterical with anger and confusion, who knows what other emotions; she even seems delusional at times. Right now she's trying...again to take out her I.V.
Just crying, screaming, hitting (which isn't normal for her). This is so sad, I'm sure she's so confused with what just happened and why she's suddenly in pain. Which brings me to this; the HUGE disappointment of the whole process. So she was done at 8:20, woke up some time between then and 8:50. When she started crying I asked if she'd had pain medicine yet, they said no. Then the nurse said she'd work on that.
Well, she didn't end up getting pain meds until 9:25, she gave her Tylenol w/ codeine.  Then continued to cry and scream which doesn't help the pain. The nurse Annalee was very nice by the way, I really liked her.  It wasn't her fault she hadn't had meds yet. All the pain med machines were on lock down so she couldn't get to them, the pharmacist had come up and tried to fix it, finally they brought some down from the pharmacy. I don't understand why they didn't give her pain meds before she woke up, or at least right after. She waited over an hour.
Dad and Fisher got here so he's now trying to comfort her. She's ripped her gown off in her pain and anger.

She's like this (most the time worse) for the first 50 min. Her throat sounds so sore. I could not get her to stop screaming and crying. She kept screaming, it hurts, it hurts and no and stop it.
Here she's starting to settle down a little after crying and screaming for 50 minutes strait!
At 8:50 the nurse adds morphine to her I.V. which sparks some interest from Skylar and calms her down the rest of the way. Maybe the morphine works that fast too....don't know.
Now she finally wants her popsicle we've been trying to offer her for the past 50 min.
She's just slurping it down now. She just told the nurse that Fisher needs a popsicle too, of course Fisher didn't object. Oh by the way, for her diet the next 2 weeks she can't eat anything with red food coloring in it, they don't want it to be confused with blood. Also soft foods of course and lots of liquids.
Having some jello.
Now she wants to hold the teddy bear they gave her, she's trying to sleep on and off but just can't fall completely asleep.
Now she wants to check out her I.V. and decides it's not so bad after all. She says "is it stuck mommy, is it stuck and I can't take it off?"
She wants to take a look at this blood pressure cuff that was driving her nuts the first hour. She kept saying it hurt, but that was while she was screaming about everything.  I finally convinced her it was hugging her leg. Annalee checked her vitals every 15 min. for the first 1 1/2 hrs, then every 1/2 hr for an hour, then ever hour after that.
 Another popsicle
The mask scratched up her nose a little bit. Her face looks a little swollen to me. They said it could be a mild reaction to the anesthetics but her breathing was always fine so they weren't concerned. I guess it could be from all the crying too though.
Time to wash her face. :)
The cute teddy bear and fleece blanket they gave her.
I just realized they must have tried to give her an I.V. in her other arm and didn't get it, unless they drew her blood or something.
"Time to do mom's hair" she told the nurse.
At 11:50 she starts to become much more active.
It's 12:00 and lunch time, she ate a little bit of jello and drank some apple juice. She didn't want anything to do with the beef broth. She wanted the lunch they brought for me, so I had to keep covering it up and eating a little at a time. They just wanted her on liquids basically until we left the hospital.

 Vitals check agian.
Removing the I.V. because she's drinking so well. She's not happy about it till after when she realizes it's gone.
Mmm having some strawberry ice cream, she ate about half of that.
Ok it's soooooo time to go home. 1:00 and she wants to run all over the place. Annalee just removed her heart monitor from her foot (because Skylar ripped the tape for the third time).
Playing on the other bed.
She wouldn't stop crying for some of my food again so I gave her a tiny piece of watermelon, then she wanted more. I asked the nurse and she called the doctor and he said it would be ok if she had soft foods now. So she ate the rest of my watermelon and canteloup.
Playing around.
I decided I might as well put her pajamas back on since she had no more gadgets attacked.
She wants to go out in the hall.
Having some vanilla ice cream now, she ate all of it.
Finally at 3:20 she falls to sleep. Of course then I wasn't able to for some reason.
Yay! Time to go home at 4:30. Thank goodness we didn't have to spend the night like Dr. Ense planned.
Liking the wheelchair ride a little bit.
Tonight she's doing really good. We got her prescriptions filled and are keeping the pain from coming back at all by giving her the pain medicine right when it's due. She's gone from running all over the house with the boys to just lying around. Overall it wasn't too bad, the worst part of the day was when they took forever to give her the pain meds. That was so hard to watch and try comforting her without it seeming to help. Also seeing her act so different than normal and seeming so confused and delusional was hard. I'll do some updates as she's healing.
Oh I forgot to mention, Kerby said if they offer me her tonsils and adenoids to accept them and he'd use them as bait to catch some nice big cat fish. I'm glad they didn't offer them!
